Very large painting of Mahatma Gandhi - 290 square feet
Photo Galleries
These photos show work in progress of two trial paintings of the final, much larger, Gandhi painting.
Photo gallery of trial paintingsThis painting was produced by means of a new invention: the printing bicycle. The printing bicycle's wheel is the instrument that transfers color onto the paper. In a manner similar to printing machines, the rubber of the tyre prints the color as it rolls over the painting surface. It is the simplest, fastest and most efficient system for producing large paintings. This method of painting is the brainchild of Borja de Pedro, a spanish painter with over 40 years of professional experience. For the first time, the printing bicycle has been presented in Kyoto, Japan for the creation of a protrait of Mahatma Gandhi.
The colors used are xylographic inks (woodblock printing inks). The 'canvas' consists of 30 sheets of 32x43 in. (82x110 cm) white card, which arranged together form a rectangle of 291.6 square feet (27.06 square meters).
Reason for making this painting
In a world full of conflict, an appeal must be made for non-violence and peace. This painting is an opportunity to remember Gandhi, a historical figure who changed the course of history through non-violence.
